If you’ve ever been to Socorro you may have noticed the desert landscape and flat lands of the rift basin; however, many don’t know that a beautiful escape into the forest is only minutes away. Water Canyon is a short 15-minute drive from the New Mexico Tech campus. It is located in the secluded Cibola National Forest within the Magdalena Mountains just west of Socorro.
After a long week of staring at a computer screen to study for exams and challenging design projects, retreating into the great outdoors was more than welcome. On Friday afternoon my friends and I packed a cooler with snacks, threw on our outdoor attire, and loaded up into my car. Once we got to Water Canyon there was so much to explore from trails and roads to creeks and mine shafts. We spent the afternoon hiking the forest trails and following the trickling creek through the mountains.
The sightseeing in the mountains of New Mexico are unlike any other. Not only do you get to experience the forest of pine trees and wildlife, but you also get to gaze upon the cows grazing in the flatlands below. The bluffs of the mountains reflect the many colors of the desert sunsets and display the unique rock formations that only New Mexico has.
There’s so much to see in and around Socorro, you just have to get out there and find it!
