One of the best parts of Socorro is the location. Socorro is surrounded by beautiful terrain full of opportunity for exploring. One of the best areas is Box Canyon. Box Canyon is a short 10 minutes southwest of Socorro and is a popular location to go hiking, rock climbing or camping. One of my favorite hobbies is rock climbing, which is what makes Box Canyon so appealing to me. Within the canyon is a recreational climbing area that is accessed by a quick 5 minute hike.
The climbs range in difficulty from 5 to 5.12 making it fun for beginning through expert climbers. My friends and I load up all of our gear and can spend hours on the various courses. It is a great way to get rid of some energy after a long day spent in lectures, labs, and doing homework.
For those that have never learned to rock climb or have forgotten the basics and are interested, New Mexico Tech offers a great 1-credit class for teaching students what they need to get going. Many techies have taken the class and really enjoyed the chance to get to climb with their friends and meet new people. In addition, if you cannot make it off campus to drive down to box canyon we do have a bouldering cave in our gym and an outdoor rock climbing wall by the golf course that is available for students to use. It is definitely a great way to spend time outdoors while getting in a good workout.
